A new recycling program that uses green carts with a RFID chip and rewards those that recycle is currently under consideration. Those that place the recycle cart out would be noted through the RFID and points awarded based upon the amount of recycled materials gathered on the whole route. The points can be redeemed for coupons and discounts through an organization called recycle bank. The link to recycle bank appears below. At that site you can see some of the national stores that are participating in the point system, and it is anticipated that local merchants will also participate.
The cost of the program would entail an increase in refuse rates of $1.50 per month. The anticipated value of the coupons for someone who recycles regularly is $200 - $225.
Wellington residents can provide input on this program change via a survey on this site, or they can email the Administrator or Council. The program will be discussed at the 7/6/2009 council meeting. Citizens can access the opinion poll through the E-Services tab on the left side menu of the home page.
