Questions and answers about the blue cart system.
What is my trash day?
If your trash day used to be picked up on Monday, your trash is now picked up on Thursday. If your trash was picked up on Thursday, your new day is Friday.
Can I still put out large items and extra trash?
Yes, the first week of the month that includes both a Thursday and Friday is designated as large item and extra trash day. For example, May 7 and 8 are the dates for May. You can put out large items that will not fit in the containers and three 32 gallon cans or six bags of extra trash.
Why did the village change to the cart system?
There are a number of reasons that the cart system was adopted.
1. New requirements from the county solid waste district would result in the loss of significant grant dollars,$155,000 over four years, if we did not adopt a pay as you throw system. These funds are used to decrease the costs of the recycling program to residents and to purchase items such as recycled paper, bleachers and other items the village uses.
2. The cost of refuse service was lower under this option, both by being able to return some of the recycling grant to support the service and in terms of costs charged by Allied Waste.
3. The carts encourage residents to recycle, recycling is good for waste costs, extends the life of the landfill and is an easy step to green our community.
4. The cart system is aesthetically a better approach than the old system and the carts are more resistant to animals who tear open bags and scatter trash.
Details on the recycling and the cart system can be found in the Allied Waste brochure.
